Where the structure breaks
The right rate is rarely one number
One rate across every plan overpays somewhere
A $19 monthly and a $2,000 annual contract rarely deserve the same percentage and most tools give you one field
You either underpay on the plan you want promoted or hand away margin on the one you did not
Give each plan in your billing catalog its own rate or no rate at all
The rate that wins a partner is the rate you pay forever
A high headline rate is what gets a partner to promote you and a recurring reward pays that rate on every renewal
You settle on a middle number instead, live with it and revisit it whenever somebody complains
Pay 20% for the first year and 10% on every renewal after, inside one reward
The refund lands after the commission is approved
The charge clears on Monday, the customer refunds on Thursday and those two facts sit in different systems
Somebody reconciles it by hand at month end, or nobody does and the overpayment goes out
A refund generates the negative commission on its own and reduces the unpaid balance before the payout runs

From rule to balance
Configure it once, then billing runs it
Pick the reward type
Cash, free months, credits, points or a discount, set as a percentage of the sale or a flat amount.
Scope it and set the limits
Choose which plans qualify and how long the reward runs. Add a cap per referral, a cap on total partner earnings or a minimum transaction if you want them.
Real charges do the arithmetic
Every commission calculates from a confirmed billing event in Stripe, Chargebee, Paddle, Recurly or Braintree. Refunds run through the same path in reverse.
Approve and it becomes a balance
Commissions approve automatically by default or you can hold anything above an amount you set for review. Approved ones roll into the balance your partner sees in their portal.
14-day free trial. No credit card required.
Pay in free months, credits or points
Cash is one reward type among several and every type gets the same approval, balance and reporting inside your affiliate management software.
Five types beyond cash
Free months, credits, points and a monetary or percentage discount, each configured the same way you configure a cash commission.
Approval fires a webhook
When the commission is approved the balance is credited and a fulfilment webhook tells your product what to grant.
Your app grants the perk
Your product applies the free month or the credit, confirms back, and the record stays in the program.

How far the rules go
Shape the reward to the deal
Decide how long a commission keeps paying
Run a reward for a set number of days or months or stop it after the first few payments. Cap the total per referral, cap what a single partner can earn or set a minimum transaction below which nothing pays.
A different rate for every plan you sell
Map products and plans from your billing catalog to their own rates and target monthly, yearly or one-time purchases separately. Plans you never want to pay on can be excluded outright.
A flat bonus when a partner clears a number
Set a threshold on referred customers or on revenue and a flat bonus fires the moment a partner reaches it. Fire it once or every time they clear the same figure again.
Better terms for one partner without a new campaign
Replace the campaign defaults for a single partner and leave everyone else untouched, with no campaign to clone and maintain alongside the original. The partner list shows who is on custom terms.
